I’m going to start this post with a brief paragraph about a piece of racing news from the week. The mighty Frankel has been ranked number 1 horse in the world this week, with a rating of 136. Frankel is a 5 time Group 1 winner, and I feel lucky to have been in the crowd to watch him race live and applaud him into the winners enclosure at Ascot in October. He really is an incredible horse. There is no other horse that realistically could have won this after the season Frankel has had. The mind boggles and heart pumps just thinking of seeing what he can do next year! I digress, on with this weeks selections.
I said in my blog on Tuesday that this is the hardest game in the world. It definietely hasn’t got any easier whilst casting my eye over the cards for Saturday! There are 7 races on for your viewing pleasure including a Class 1 Hurdle and a Class 1 Chase! Below are a run down of my selections.
2:30 Warwick - 3m1f Cl2 Handicap Hurdle
Up to class 2 but a strong contender is my first choice, Thehillofuisneach. Won with the greatest of ease in his last race at Uttoxeter and despite the rise in weights (22lbs) I think he’ll do well again today. Relishes the soft ground and this distance and think it’ll be a very good horse to beat him to the post. I got 4/1 for him, and if you can get that, get on, because i’d imagine it to be much shorter come tomorrow.
My Tip: Thehillofuisneach (4/1)
2:50 Kempton - 2m5f Cl2 Handicap Hurdle
This is a very tough one to look at with a lot of horses capable of stepping up to the mark. The stats say that 6 year olds have the upper hand in this race, with 4 out of the last 5 winners of this coming out on top. With that in mind, 6 year old Act of Kalanisi is my next choice. This horse has been appearing in higher calibre races lately and in races which are a bit quick for him. However, down in grade and up in distance to 21f I think he could well take his chance today. Comes from the small yard of Dr. Richard Newland but the trainer has a smart record with his horses and is 2/3 this year. Barry Geraghty takes the mount and here’s hoping he can make amends for his ride on Master of the Hall last week!
My Tip: Act of Kalanisi (15/2)
3:40 Warwick - 3m5f ClG3 Handicap Chase
On Tuesday I said I had a somewhat interesting choice for this race, and here it is. My each way selection is Miko De Beauchene, the 12 year old from the yard of the still bang in form Venetia Williams. Now, at first look you may think about avoiding this horse, but I believe it’s worth a second look. Venetia Williams (sorry to bang on, but she really is doing well) is in top form, this is her only entry in the race and I can’t see her putting this horse in a Class 1 race just to let it plod around. He’ll be carrying just 10st which is the lightest weight he has ever carried and is running off of a mark of 127. The last win this horse had it was off of a mark of 144, the race prior to that which he also won was off of a mark of 135, both of those races were the same grade as this one. I haven’t even mentioned yet that all of this horses best results have come over this distance, AND 10 years ago, a 25/1 shot won this race, as a 12 year old with a female trainer.
If you’re willing to overlook it’s last 4 races and the fact he’s at the wrong end of the age range, if he finishes then he’ll reward you for your each way punt, and he’ll do for me at 25/1.
If you’re looking for something in the race that isn’t the rank outstider, however, it may pay to side with Alan King’s Blazing Bailey. King has had the last two winners of this race and after a tough Welsh National at Chepstow in December this horse is back down to a winning mark of 146. Wayne Hutchinson takes the ride and here’s hoping a bit of last weeks luck and magic on Hold on Julio rubs off here, too. This horse works best at this distance, and enjoys a bit of cut in the ground which he’ll definitely get.
My Tips: Miko De Beauchene e/w (25/1)
Blazing Bailey e/w (10/1)
So, take your choice(s) and enjoy the races. After all, that’s the main thing! I’ll review the selections and post again on Tuesday!
